ALAMINOS CITY–The city government here led the planting of hundreds of mangrove seedlings last week at the Bued Mangrove Forest Park as part of the celebration of the International Mangrove Day set on July 26.

Mayor Hernani Braganza said the activity was aimed at educating people, particularly the children, of the importance of mangroves in efforts towards environmental protection.

He pointed out that mangroves play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance “not only in our water but also inland” as these serve as breeding grounds for fish and protect the sea from soil erosion.

“Yung mga dumi na nanggagaling sa mainland, ito (mangrove) ang sumasangga, kaya napa-panatili ang magandang kalidad ng tubig,” he added.

Non-government organizations and other government line agencies participated in the activity, which Braganza said he hopes to make into an annual event.

Councilor Earl James Aquino, chairman of the city council’s agriculture and environment committee, said he will sponsor a resolution that will make mangrove planting a yearly event.—CSR
