DESPITE the global economic crisis, Ilocos Region registered an increase of 4.4 percent on employment generation or about 79,000 more jobs for the people.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Director Henry John Jalbuena said that compared to January 2008 where openings for 1.7 million jobs only were registered, the multi-agency Job Fair over the weekend at the CSI The City Mall Atrium in Dagupan City saw an increase by 79,000 more jobs.

He said the new employment opportunities were made possible by business establishments like the CSI and SM malls that expanded their operations to other places in the region.

He pointed out that employment does not only count wage-earners but the self-employed as well.

Meanwhile, Jalbuena said skilled laborers with information technology skills have advantage over others in the employment sector.#
