It’s Congress for Gina de Venecia
FINALLY, Georgina “Manay Gina” de Venecia has decided on her political move for the 2010 election.
De Venecia will seek a Congress seat as representative of the 4th district, a position that her husband, former House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr. is vacating after completing the maximum three terms allowed by law.
In a telephone interview with The PUNCH, Manay Gina said she made her decision after “months of soul searching” and consultations with local government leaders, including mayors and barangay chairmen.
She added that she is aware that she will be up against formidable opponents in the district but is ready to face the challenge.
Among those reportedly eyeing the same position are former Philippine National Police Chief Arturo Lomibao from Mangaldan and DENR Usec. Eli Quinto of Dagupan City.
De Venecia said she has no political party affiliation though she has strong political links with the opposition.
Earlier, former President Joseph Estrada, an opposition leader, announced that De Venecia would be in UNO’s party’s senatorial line-up.
De Venecia said she has already informed Estrada of her decision.
She added that Estrada has promised to help her in her candidacy regardless of her party affiliation.
“President Joseph Estrada whom my husband Joe and I consider not only as a political ally but a true friend knows my predicament,” she said.
De Venecia, who actively supported her husband in his political career, said it took her a longtime to decide not just on what position to vie for but also whether to enter politics.
“I am a housewife and a mother and I know that this decision is life-changing,” she said.
She said if elected, she intends to carry on with the programs and projects of her husband.
“After considering these things, I have decided to offer myself at the proper time as a candidate for congresswoman in the 4th dist of Pangasinan,” she said. #
