STA. BARBARA–The police force in the town is doing more than keep the peace and order. They have initiated a feeding program to feed and, yes, to promote reading among the town’s youth.

Dubbed as “Feed and Read to Lead”, the project involves feeding undernourished children along with reading sessions, particularly about the achievements of successful citizens and heroes from the town such as the late Senator Daniel Maramba, who was the first governor of Pangasinan, and World War II hero 2Lt Cornelio Bustillo.

Liza Melendez, a successful certified public accountant who hails from this town and the incumbent Rotary Assistant Governor of District 3790, was the guest of honor during the launching.

“We are feeding the children and at the same time feeding their mind by inculcating to them the love of reading”, Melendez said.

Superintendent Eric Noble, town police chief, said the project is funded by the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1976 with help from PNP Chief Director General Jesus Versoza, National Capital Region Police Office Chief, Leopoldo Bataoil and Ilocos Region Police Chief, Luizo Ticman.

Noble said Mayor Velasco, himself a PMA graduate and former police general, facilitated the financial support from the PMA alumni.

At the project launching, Becky Tim, an American Peace Corps volunteer working at the local orphanage Kalinga ng Ama Shelter for Children, read an article on the exploits of Mayor Velasco as a soldier and policeman, to some 500 children.

Noble thanked the Association of Community Educators, Teachers and Administrators, the Community Health Educators and the Eagles Nest Christian Academy for their help.#
