LINGAYEN–Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz, one of the most vocal critics of the Arroyo administration, defended the Church’s role in ensuring good governance.

“It should be emphasized that politics and politicians are not exempted from the 10 Commandments of God,” said Cruz in reaction to the statement of House Speaker Prospero Nograles Catholic bishops should not be listened to on matters regarding politics.

Cruz, said the bishops and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines limit themselves to talks about the ethical dimensions of politics and the moral values of politicians, “and not politics per se.”

“They’re not beyond the norm of what is good or evil, what is virtuous or vicious,” he stressed and challenged the politicians to read the statement of CBCP and the bishops closely and determine if these are not anchored on ethics and morals.

Cruz said if politicians were not covered by the commandments of not to steal, not to kill, not to covet thy neighbor’s wife, not to bear false witness against their neighbors, etc., then he, like million others, would not mind becoming a politician himself.

“It becomes very convenient, very profitable and very beneficial,” he said.

And this, he said, is exactly what plagues the country’s politicians these days. #
