Pawil Dagupan: A sentimental night for balikbayans
PAWIL Dagupan, a traditional homecoming event for overseas Dagupenos, will again be held on December 30 as one of the major culminating events of the 2008 Dagupan City Fiesta.
Atty. Manny Aoa-nan, executive assistant and event chairman for Pawil Dagupan, said the long revered tradition returns this year with more activities that highlight ties with friends and family.
“The most beautiful discovery that overseas Dagupenos make is that they can grow separately without growing apart. Love and friendship are the innumerable fibers that bring us all back to the heartland of the city that gave flesh to our individual dreams and hopes,” Aoanan said.
Pawil Dagupan was originally launched as a tourism program by Mayor Alipio Fernandez in 1992 to encourage overseas Dagupenos to come home in December for the yuletide season and the Dagupan City fiesta.
“The program is all about making a sentimental visit for reunions with relatives and friends and cherishing moments from their childhood place —now a pulsing, huge metropolis” Fernandez said.
“Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose, that’s why overseas Dagupenos always come home,” he added.
Councilor Alfie Fernandez, fiesta hermano mayor, extolled overseas Dagupenos as natural extensions and a valuable part of the city. #
