Dawel-Pantal highway named after JdV’s dad
THE more than four-kilometer Dawel-Pantal-Lucao Road has been officially named Jose R. de Venecia Highway Extension in honor of the late father of its builder, 4th District Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr.
The Dagupan City Council, in a special session on Wednesday, approved a resolution assigning the name to the road stretching from Sitio Dawel in barangay Pantal to Pantal Proper, then to Lucao through Poblacion Oeste with a long bridge in-between spanning across the Pantal River.
Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, the council’s presiding officer, told newsmen the decision was made in recognition of De Venecia’s contribution to the project, which was built from the former House Speaker’s Countrywide Development Assistance Fund (CDAF).
The choice of name is also in line with plans to linkthe highway to a larger circumferential road that connects to the existing Jose R de Venecia Sr. Highway from Calasiao to Lucao in Dagupan, which was also funded by the younger De Venecia.
The circumferential road will be completed with the construction of another segment of the road in the southeastern and northwestern parts of the city.
“It is the decision of the city council and of course Mayor Al Fernandez to name the road after the late father of the former Speaker,” Vice Mayor Fernandez said.
Fernandez also said she will recommend that the area be declared as Dagupan’s eco-tourism zone.
She said the proposal will, however, require prescription of a new building and zoning code for the area.
At the same time, Fernandez favors suggestions to issue new franchises for public utility vehicles that will ply the Dawel-Lucao route, to decongest Dagupan’s downtown area.—LM
