ACTING Mayor Belen Fernandez has called for the creation of a mini forest in every school and barangay here as Dagupan City’s contribution to the worldwide effort aimed at slowing down global warming.

Fernandez, speaking before a group of science students of the St. John High School on Tuesday, cited as an example the Lucao Elementary School, which built its own tree nursery, gardens for vegetables and ornamental plants, fishpond, chicken coop and rice field.

Lucao Elementary School has been named a model school for the “Pagsasarili” program being promoted by the Department of Education’s schools division.

Fernandez told her student audience that since the problem on global warming was caused by people, and then it’s incumbent upon people themselves to find solutions for the planet.

The planting of trees to form forests in every school can help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is produced by the burning of fossil fuel in cars and factories, including coal-fired plants.

Fernandez also commended the owners of private cars, taxis and jeepneys who have shifted to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to run their vehicles, which an eco-friendlier gas.

At the same time, Fernandez called on the city’s residents to develop the habit of segregating, reusing and recycling their wastes and to convert the residuals into compost for use as gar den fertilizer.

She also recommended the adoption of the “war on wastes” program of the CSI Group of Companies, which Fernandez owns, which are basically easy steps to help save the environment, i.e., the prudent use of water and switching off lights and other electrical equipment like computers when not needed. —LM
