LINGAYEN–Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz does not see better times ahead for the country in the coming year.

“Frankly, I hope to God I’m wrong. I fervently would like to say that 2009 and 2010 would be a better year but my perception, it will be more difficult years,” he said.

“There’ll be more troublesome times, there’ll be more disgusted people, there’ll be more helpless poor and I do not know what it will take to get this government get out of power and authority,” added Cruz, a staunch critic of the Arroyo administration.

The massive turnout in the Makati interfaith rally last week against Charter change, Cruz said, is a clear indication that the people are tired of the corruption in the present administration and would like to have a new set of leaders by 2010 when the presidential elections is scheduled.

Cruz, however, said another EDSA-style solution will not address the deeply-rooted problems in government.

“It’s like a tree wherein when you prune it, but your preserve the trunk and the roots, the tree will grow again branches… Then it’s exactly the same crazy, stupid rotten tree and so it cannot be Edsa 1 and 2 anymore because nothing will happen,” he said.

Cruz also rejected Malacanang’s continued denial that Charter change initiatives in Congress are intended to extend the President’s term.

“I’m sorry if I find it very, very hard to believe Malacañang… because they were the ones who caused this upon themselves with lie after lie after lie, corruption after corruption after corruption,” Cruz said.#
