Burning of infected pigs urged
BURN all hogs found positive and those suspected to be infected with the ebola virus, said a councilor from Dagupan.
Councilor Jesus Canto, formerly director of the Region 1 Medical Center, said burning is the safest way to eradicate the Ebola Reston virus found at the Lambino farm in Barangay Parian, Manaoag.
“My personal suggestion is for the burning of all hogs in that pig farm to make sure that the virus of Ebola Reston will not really spread,” said Canto, chair on health and sanitation committee of the Dagupan City council.
He added that the quarantine imposed on the form may not be enough to contain the problem.
He pointed out this is the procedure undertaken in other countries, including Hongkong, China, Indonesia and Thailand during bird flu infestations.
While the strain of the virus has been found by the Department of Health not to affect humans, Canto said all necessary precautions still need to be taken.
Canto called on veterinary and sanitary officers in Dagupan to conduct a thorough inspection on all meats being sold in local public markets to ensure that these are not contaminated bythe virus.
Dagupan does not have its own slaughterhouse and sources its meat supply from neighboring Mangaldan, which has an abattoir with double A classification.
Meanwhile, Manaoag Mayor Napoleon Sales, himself a doctor, gave assurance that the slaughterhouse is under close supervision. — LM
