Notorious frats shooed out of Sta. Barbara schools
STA. BARBARA–The attempt of notorious fraternities to establish foothold in schools in this town has so far been foiled through collaborative efforts of the local government, police, school authorities and parents.
“Before fraternities could gain foothold in schools, we had already nipped them in the bud,” said Mayor Reynaldo Velasco adding that dialogues among the police, teachers and parents are still continuing.
He cited the case of Samahang Anak ng Sta. Barbara that attempted to establish a chapter in Banaoang National High School.
The leader of the organization, a non-student, was blocked by the police before he can start recruiting from the student population.
During the Municipal Peace and Order Council meeting presided over by Velasco, the police reported that it was in the Banaoang High School where a student being recruited into the SAS hit the school’s guidance counselor.
Another fraternity also initially managed to recruit members inside the Don Daniel Maramba National High School but its leaders have also been taken into custody for questioning.
At least 30 students from the school were already set to undergo initiation when the police stepped in at the request of school authorities.
The students were later directed to undergo counseling.
Saying he will not tolerate misguided school fraternities, Velasco, a retired police deputy director general, called for stronger cooperation among the police, school authorities and parents in order to protect pupils and students from unruly and trouble-prone fraternities.
“The dialogues among all these partners are continuing which bodes well for the peace and order in every school,” said Velasco.
He said there is an existing police liaison in every barangay in the town whom school authorities can tap help to assist schools at any time.—LM
