Free hot soup and ‘lugaw’ after ‘Misa de Gallo’
THE city government will open its first soup kitchen on December 16, in time for the start of the traditional nine-day dawn mass known as Misa de Gallo and as part of Dagupan’s fiesta celebration.
Councilor Alfie Fernandez, this year’s fiesta hermano mayor, said the soup kitchen will serve hot soup, lugaw and other nutritious meals after people come from the church.
“Many people have become jaded that Christmas is a holiday being reserved for the rich. Christmas is for everyone — children, the elderly and the poor,” he said, adding that current economic conditions will make this initiative more relevant.
Leah Aquino, city nutrition officer, said preparations are already underway to ensure support from Dagupan’s broad community of nonprofit organizations.
Aquino said volunteers will cook, serve and clean and the food will be served to people regardless of religious affiliation.
“It’s there for anyone who needs it. They will be fed regardless of faith. This spirit of inclusion and equality is reinforced by the spirit of the season,” she said.
“Christmas has always been a season for giving. For Dagupan City though, giving and sharing do not only come at Christmas time. Instead, we make it an everyday advocacy to help other people,” Fernandez said.—LM
