Deaths by suicide on the rise
LINGAYEN–Poverty and depression are beginning to take their toll on families in the province. An alarming rate of suicide cases in the province has been noted.
For the period from January to November 13 this year, 18 deaths due to suicide were recorded by the police.
In October alone, four persons reportedly committed suicide and two more cases have been recorded this month.
Based on data provided by P/Supt. David Rapisora, deputy provincial director for operations, to The PUNCH, 14 of the total casualties were male, the youngest being 16 and the oldest 75.
Four of the victims were from San Carlos City and two each in Manaoag and Lingayen towns while one each was recorded in the towns of Umingan, Malasiqui, Villasis, Labrador, Mapandan, Sual, Bani, Urbiztondo, Mangaldan and Dagupan City.
Police investigations indicate that motives for the suicides were usually personal problem involving either a serious disease or financial difficulties.
Twelve of the casualties were hanged themselves while five died due to gunshots and one by stabbing himself.
Earlier, the Philippine Mental Health Association office in Dagupan reported that there has been an increase in male patients seeking assistance.#
