City to demolish 800 fishpens
AFTER procrastinating in the past, the Dagupan City government finally found the will to launch another operation against illegal fish pens that have mushroomed anew in many of the city’s tributaries.
On orders of City Administrator Alvin Fernandez, some 800 illegal fish pens are set to be demolished by the campaign started on Tuesday.
City Agriculturist Emma Molina reported that the demolition team, using a trawl boat to ram the illegal fish pens, succeeded in demolishing 100 illegal fish pens on the first day of the operation.
The team, according to Molina, scheduled the demolition run three times a week till all the illegal fish pens were done away.
But many business-men here, however, doubt if the team can accomplish its mission since many of the owners of the big illegal fish pens are prominent families in Dagupan and in other parts of Pangasinan.
City Information Officer Ryan Ravanzo said of the 800 illegal fish pens marked for demolition, 600 units have been identified as being owned by different operators who did not renew their Aquatic Lease Agreement (ALA) with the city government.
Molina said Dagupan and Pangasinan cannot afford another fish kill that will again result in huge losses for legitimate investors and growers.
