FRESH from its championship victory four days ago, the University of Luzon Tigers went on to score another significant victory by crushing the Lyceum of Subic Bay in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) cluster 1 elimination round last October 10 at the DWAD gym.

The Tigers, with its five key players Paul Sabordo, Marbin Macalalad, Norman Ilao, Willy Caina and Jonathan Panunciar combining 48 points at the first half to take the lead 62-57, thumped the visitors as well in the second half, 47-27, ending the game at 109-84.

The victory gave the Tigers a slot in the zone 1 PCCL conference on November 3-9 in Manila.

The Zambales boys — who humiliated the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes, 109-64, during their initial game on October 9 — trailed the Golden Tigers from the start and was never given a chance to close the gap with Macalalad pumping three treys with Sabordo, Caina and Ilao assisting in the inside moves at the last quarter helping the lead to bloat up to the last buzzer.

The Tigers of Dagupan City dad Chito Samson Jr., under the stewardship of Jack Vidal, will prove their mettle anew in their Manila stint as they face four formidable foes: the Mapua Institute of Technology, Saint Louis University, Lyceum-Batangas and Arellano University.

According to Seato Gonimil, cluster 1 event coordinator, the top two winning teams of zone 1 will enter the championship qualifying round called the “sweet 16” for the final challenge that includes 2008 UAAP champion Ateneo University and automatic qualifiers the universities of La Salle, San Beda, Jose Rizal, MLQ, UV, the Universal Colleges of Nursing, San Sebastian and Cavite plus the winners of zone 4 and Mindanao.—JAG, Jr.
