LINGAYEN–The provincial government stands to earn a ‘bonus’ grant for its health projects after its performance in the implementation of health programs was rated second best in the country.

The European Commission (EC), supporting 16 provinces in their health programs, will reward the province with P7 million fund. Dr. Jackson Soriano, provincial health officer, told local newsmen here Thursday that the province’s implementation of a five-year health program started in 2006, will receive a boost.

He said the P7-million bonus is on top of the P19 million annual grant provided by the EC to Pangasinan.

Pangasinan received a rating 85 percent next to Capiz in the recent evaluation of the first year implementation of the said five-year project conducted by EC.

The EC grant directly benefits the seven district hospitals, six community hospitals and one provincial hospital operated by the provincial government.

He credits Governor Amado Espino Jr. for the very high priority he gave for the expansion and improvement of facilities and services of the hospitals.

The six community hospitals are now being upgraded from 15 to 25- bed capacity, the district hospitals from 50 to 75-bed capacity, and the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital from 150 to 250-bed capacity.

A major component in the expansion program is up grading of laboratory equipment including ECG, and ultrasound.

He said a two-storey dialysis center of the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital in San Carlos City being constructed can house 12 machines and can serve 20 to 30 indigent patients a day at minimal cost.

There will also be air-conditioned rooms in hospitals to be offered at subsidized rates.

“Next to peace and order, health concern is the priority of our governor so we are very thankful for the attention he is giving to our health service,” Soriano said.

He cited the big number of indigent Pangasinenses enrolled by the governor for PhilHealth insurance coverage as one factors for the high rating by EC. #
