UL Tigers overwhelm UPang Webczars 86-70

DEFENDING champions University of Luzon Golden Tigers surged fast in the first half and showed no signs of slowing down in the last two quarters to score a convincing 86-70 victory over arch-enemy, the University of Pangasinan Webczars, in the second round of the 2008 PRISAA Pangasinan-Dagupan Inter-Collegiate Championship held at Lyceum Northwestern University gym last Friday.

The raging Tigers, getting solid contributions from its three mainstays Norman Ilao, Geran Paul Sabordo, Marvin Macalalad and rookie Carlito Cubo, rattled the Webczars with fast breaks and four treys, closing the first half with an 11-point lead, 45-34.

The Tigers maintained their lead in the third period, 56-46, and closed the fourth and final period with a 5-0 spurt to increase their double-digit advantage up to the finish and boosted their bid for a slot in the semis.

The Tigers’ conquest was a belated gift forDagupan City Councilor Chito Samson who spent his birthday four days after the match.

Forward-center Norman Ilao had a game high 19 points while the youthful Cubo delivered his highest output this season with 15. Prolific power-forward Sabordo contributed14 while Macalalad had 11.

UL TIGERS CLOBBER THE LNU DUKES

Meanwhile, the UL Tigers subdued their nemesis the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) Dukes, 79-69 in their recent game on September 24,

Down by nine points, 33-24, by the end of the first two periods, the gritty Tigers of Councilor Chito Samson started the third period with amazing eight treys, six of them done consecutively by the tandem of point guards Marvin Macalalad and Jonathan Panunciar.

“We did our utmost to win this time convincingly because we were humiliated during our first battle with them losing an unforgettable 16 points,” said head coach Jack Vidal.

Tigers topped the elimination round with 12 wins and a single loss and holds a twice-to-beat advantage against Lingayen-based PSU that landed fourth.

Dukes, likewise got a twice-to-beat edge with 11 wins and two losses and to face 2005 titlists the University of Pang-asinan Webczars with a 10-3 card..

The four teams clash for the semis Monday starting at 1:00 p.m. at the same venue.—JAGJr.
