THE University of Luzon women’s volleyball team started the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) inaugural tournament in Region 1 on a bright note by scoring a three straight set win over five-time PRISAA regional champion San Carlos College on September 6 at the Lyceum Northwestern University gym.

The board recorded 25-17, 25-22 and 25-19 scores.

The Golden Tigresses of Dagupan City Councilor Chito Samson, back after a five-year leave from active competition, immediately jumped the gun on the San Carlos-based spikers behind the gritty plays of prized recruit Angie Somera, ably supported by Melanie Carrera and team libero May Marcellano to snatch the first set.

In the second set, the two teams battled on even terms in the early part, but again, the Tigresses took a scoring spree towards the end.

The third set was no different from the first when the Tigresses again went on a scoring run and was never threatened.

In the second game for women, Saint Louis Colleges of La Union beat PIMSAT Colleges in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-14 and 25-16.

MNCAA and WNCAA Region 1 Director Seato Gonimil said SCUAA provincial champion PSU is also participating and the tourney serves as the elimination process for regional representation wherein the winner of which will advance to the national MNCAA and WNCAA championships to be staged early next year in San Pedro, Laguna.

The tournament will be played in San Carlos City, San Fernando City (LU) and Dagupan City on ‘home and away format.’–JAGJr.
