A former barangay captain and a balikbayan known for his advocacy for backyard gardening, is set to launch another ‘green revolution’ in his neighborhood in barangay Lucao in Dagupan.

Alfredo Dawana, barangay head of Tapuac from 1966 to 1978, is busy preparing for the launch of his “Green Revolution at Sitio Tocok”, encouraging and convincing his neighbors at Sitio Tocok in Lucao to plant vegetables in their backyard for free source of food and additional income.

Dawana, who has moved to the United States but is currently on vacation here, did the same when he was still a barangay captain in Tapuac and has also been planting vegetables in his backyard in the US.

“Iba talaga ‘yung may tanim na gulay sa bakuran dahil hindi mo na kailangang bumili pa, pipitas na lang ng bunga at mas masarap pa,” said Dawana.

He recently bought vegetable seeds in Urdaneta City and Villasis for distribution to his neighbors, who mostly rely on fishing for their livelihood.

He said the ‘green revolution also aims to teach the people of self-reliance, “para maiwasan na din ‘yung puro hingi.”—CSR
