LITTLE known veteran amateur rider Reynaldo Calosa sent a strong message to his competitors that he’s ready to tackle the professional racing league next year by conquering the all-amateur Romero-Emperador Cycling Challenge last Tuesday in a convincing fashion.

Calosa, 23, of barangay San Juan, San Jacinto, who has not held a crown since he started cycling competitively four years ago, floated with the lead pack in the first six of seven rounds, then spurted ahead on the last 17 kilometers to finish by his lonesome, bringing home the P5,000 top prize.

Calosa, the third of five in a cycling clan, negotiated the 126- kilometer Mangaldan-San Fabian-San Jacinto circuit race in three hours, eight minutes and 42 seconds, a minute 32 seconds ahead of his closest pursuers led by Mangaldanon Adrian Malanum.

San Fabian born Rene Esteban came in a close third behind Malanum.

Ryan Cantor of San Manuel and Ariel Flores of Mangaldan finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Cycling buffs Dr. Demosthenes Ydia, Mangaldan Councilor Melchor de Guzman, Engr.Joey Aquino and San Carlos City born Blandino Caguioa, now based in Texas, sponsored the six “summit sprint” prizes that were also dominated by the top five finishers.

The event was participated in by 74 cyclists from Pangasinan and nearby provinces in conjunction with the celebration of Mangaldan hizzoner Herminio A. Romero’s birthday.

The major sponsors Emperador Distillers, Inc. under the auspices of Rico Pineda, Gen. Leopoldo N. Bataoil, Mangaldan vice mayor Pedro A. Surdilla, Jr., former Gov. Oscar Orbos, Fourth District Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario and 2nd Engineering Office czar Engr. Rodolfo “Boy” Dion.

The pedal-by-pedal account of the event was aired live from start to finish over DZRD Sonshine Radio 981 Khz AM.—JAGJr.
