Next attraction in Hundred Islands: ‘Baguio Island’
ALAMINOS CITY–Soon there will be a little Baguio in the Hundred Islands.
Following a sisterhood pact signed by this city’s Mayor Hernani Braganza and Baguio City Mayor Reinaldo Bautista last week, one of the islands in the Hundred Islands National Park (HINP) will be developed as a miniature version of Baguio, dubbed as the summer capital of the Philippines.
“We would like to develop the island with auniquely Cordilleran theme like the Nayong Pilipino, where famous destinations in the country will be featured, this time in every island of the Hundred Islands.” Braganza said.
This will be the first time that an island will be named after a group or a sister city.
“This will be a symbol of our close, mutual and lasting friendship and partnership,” he added.
The initiative, according to the mayor is also part of the continuing effort to double or triple tourist arrivals.
In 2005, one of the islands was named after the late President Diosdado Macapagal to mark the hand-over by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, his daughter, of the HINP to the local government.
Bautista said he also hopes to get the support of Alaminos in the city’s efforts to reclaim the full management and administration of Burnham Park from the national government.
“Technically, this sisterhood signing is just a formality,” Braganza said, noting that the two cities have long held strong ties with 70% of Baguio’s population having roots in Pangasinan and the trade of Baguio vegetables with Alaminos marine products.
Another island is being eyed for a lion’s head carving through a partnership with the Lion’s Club.#
