Stable rice supply in Pangasinan assured

The long queues for the NFA rice are disappearing, or so it seems.

This was the observation of the National Food Authority a month after 301,444 bags of rice were unloaded in the Ilocos region and part of the Cordilleras.

According to NFA Regional Director Joseph de la Cruz, NFA will release another 400,000 bags of rice to various outlets to further stabilize the price of the cereal this month.

The move, he said, is intended to make government rice accessible and affordable to the poor and at the same time force a reduction in the price of commercial rice.

De la Cruz attributed the significant drop in price of commercial rice last month from a high of P36 to P37 per kilo two months ago to P32 to the release of stocks to some 1,170 outlets.

The drop in price of commercial rice in effect allayed fears that rice prices will soar during the lean months (July to September) this year, he said.

“The disappearance of long queues has also reinforced the national government’s assurance that there will be no rice shortage during the lean months,” de la Cruz added.

He cited the capability of NFA outlets sell five kilos per customer now, instead of only three kilos allotted in the past few months.

The NFA is presently supplying rice to 20 rolling stores, 579 Tindahan Natin Outlets, 32 Tindahan sa Parokya outlets, all of which are classified as NFA’s Community-based Market Outlets.

All continue to sell NFA rice at P25 per kilo.-LM
