Now it’s clear who is boss.

P/Superintendent Mariano Luis Verzosa is the OIC chief of police at the Dagupan police station after P/Superintendent Geraldo Roxas, the first officer designated to the position, gave way.

Verzosa, a graduate of the Philippine Military Academy class 1984, was designated initially as supervisor of the Dagupan Police last week while Roxas held the position of OIC.

“We talked to each other on who should give orders and he decided to give way,” said Verzosa.

Until their talk, the officers and men of the Dagupan police were in a quandary as to whom they will take orders from and who should sign papers.

Roxas, the Dagupan station’s deputy chief and a graduate of the Philippine National Police Academy, was designated earlier by P/Sr. Supt. Isagani Nerez, police provincial director, as OIC immediately upon the relief of P/Supt. Dionicio Borromeo as station chief.

Confusion ensued when Verzosa was later designated supervisor on orders of P/chief Supt. Romeo Hilomen, regional director.

Verzosa hails from the town of Lingayen and is a son of the late Mayor Mariano Verzosa.

Between him and Roxas, Verzosa enjoys the confidence of Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr.

The position of chief of police of Dagupan was vacated following the relief of Superintendent Dionicio Borromeo who has been implicated in the trillion-peso shabu laboratory in sitio Binmotobot, Naguilian, La Union busted by lawmen on July 9.

Borromeo is now with the Philippine National Police (PNP) Holding Unit in Camp Crame to face an investigation from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group.

Verzosa said that as OIC, he will work vigorously with the city mayor and sustain the momentum generated by his predecessors in the campaign against criminality, illegal drugs and prostitution in the city.

Verzosa will remain OIC of Dagupan police until Fernandez picks a permanent chief of police from a short list of officers to be given by the PNP.—LM
