Abalos said there are at least 35 teams joining the said tournament tentatively set on the second week of September.

Chess clinics have also been conducted with help from the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NAFCA)) and a series of tournaments are being planned.

On August 30 and 31, a table tennis tournament for the city schools is scheduled in coordination with the Young Men’s Christian Association.

Competitions for badminton, boxing, and athletics among others, have also been lined up to serve as practice and selection events.

“We will select the best players from these mini tournaments to represent the city in the coming regional meet (IRAA) on February next year,” Abalos said.

Abalos said the selection and training of young athletes early had to be scheduled since these will coincide with the preparation of the competition facilities for the regional games.—CSR
