WW2 vintage mortar bombs found in Sison town
SISON–Fifteen World War II vintage bombs were dug up at a construction site beside the town police station and the municipal hall here on Thursday.
The bombs were immediately transported to the Pangasinan Police Office (PPO) in Lingayen town for safekeeping at the ammunition dump and proper disposal later, according to SPO1 Gerardo Macaraeg.
Macaraeg and Supt. Noel Vallo, two of the authorized policemen of the PPO’s Explosives and Ordnance Disposal team, were immediately dispatched by P/Sr. Supt. Isagani Nerez, the police provincial director, upon receiving the report of the bomb discovery from Mayor Kimi Cojuangco.
Macaraeg said the site where the vintage bombs were found used to be a garrison/barracks of the Japanese soldiers during World War II.
Recovered were six 81mm mortars and another nine 90mm mortars used on recoilless rifles (RR).
Sr. Supt Noli TaliƱo, former police chief of Dagupan City and now provincial director of La Union, himself a bomb and explosives expert, said these mortars are so strong that when it lands, it explodes like a bomb.
The RR mortars found here measured about two feet long and covered with rust, Macaraeg said.
Macaraeg advised people who recover vintage bombs to immediately call police authorities for proper handling and disposal.#
