Pangasinan, the most populated province in the country, continues to be a big source of potential manpower and major vote strength in national elections.

Its population has increased by 7.3% over a 7-year period, from 2.46 million in 2000 to 2.64 million as of August 2007.

Based on the latest Census of Population (POPCEN) conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) provincial office in August 2007, the province’s population totaled 2,645,395.

The results, down to the barangay level, were included in the national POPCEN result made official with the signing by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of Proclamation No. 1489 on April 16, 2008.

Based on the results, more than 25 per cent of the populations in Pangasinan are in the three cities of San Carlos, Dagupan and Urdaneta and the two municipalities of Malasiqui and Bayambang.

The results showed that San Carlos City had the largest population with 161,844 or 6.18 percent, followed by Dagupan City with 149,554 or 5.71 percent and Malasiqui with 122,785 percent or 4.69 percent.

Meanwhile, Urdaneta City has 120,785 or 4.61 percent and Bayambang, 103,145 or 3.94 percent.

Two barangays in Dagupan, Bonuan Gueset and Pantal are the most populous barangays.

Bonuan Gueset headed by Barangay Captain Angelito Gumarang is the most populous barangay with a population of 20,335 while Pantal, headed by Barangay Captain Lilia Yasar, is the second highest with 16,835.

Barangay Poblacion in Lingayen ranks third highest with 12,612 while Poblacion in Alaminos has 10,095 and Bonuan Boquig, also in Dagupan, has 10,852.

The result also showed that the smallest town in Pangasinan in terms of population is Santo. Tomas with 13,706.—LM
