LINGAYEN–Following the President’s expression of discontent over delays in the delivery of promised galvanized iron (GI) sheets, the regional director of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has given assurance of a 60 percent delivery to victims of super typhoon Cosme.

A second delivery of 13,000 GI sheets for Pangasinan was made Monday, according to Engineer Fidel Ginez, regional director for the Ilocos region of DPWH.

Arroyo was furious over the slow pace of rehabilitation work in Pangasinan and in La Union when she came here to preside over the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council meeting on July 4.

She ordered the DPWH and the Department of Education (DepEd) in charge of schools repair to “Release, release” needed materials after some mayors complained of not getting any help from the national government despite the promise earlier made by the President.

Arroyo, during a Cabinet meeting here on May 23, instructed the Department of Budget and Management to immediately release P500 million for the purchase of roofing materials for those whose roofs have been totally damaged by the May 17 typhoon.

Ginez explained that the delay was due to the supplies failure to deliver following Typhoon Frank.

Ginez also said the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office under director Margarita Sampang has set July 9 as the deadline for the submission of the list of qualified recipients or beneficiaries from the local government units.

The fund for the GI sheets was reportedly sourced from President Gloria Arroyo’s Emergency Shelter Allowance Fund.

Based on initial validated reports of DSWD, the total requirements for Pangasinan is about 153,000 GI sheets.

As of last week, Sampang said they have already validated around 96 percent.

Ginez said for Pangasinan and La Union, delivery of 300,000 GI sheets was projected with each beneficiary receiving a minimum of six pieces and maximum of 20 pieces of GI sheets.

First to receive the promised GI sheets were typhoon victims in Dagupan City, Bugallon, Dasol and Infanta which immediately submitted their reports.

“Walang palakasan dito at sila ang inuuna,” Ginez said obviously referring to the late submission of reports by the rest of the mayors. #
