MOTORIZED banca operators and rowers, locally called bangkeros, plying the Calmay and Pantal rivers were provided with life vests by the Dagupan City government to promote safe travel.

At least 67 life vests were distributed by Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. to rowers and another 60 for operators of motorized banca.
In providing the life vests, city government, however, now call on the operators to provide life vests for each of their respective passengers.

A single banca, depending on its size, carries six to 10 passengers, including its operator.

Public and Order Safety Office Chief Robert Erfe Mejia said this will finally pave the way for safer travel through the rivers.

Meanwhile, a draft ordinance on water transportation requiring banca operators to comply with the minimum requirements for travel safety within the city’s river systems, is being prepared.—LM
