SP asks CHED to probe review centers’ status
THE Dagupan City Council has asked the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to crack the whip on fraudulent and substandard review schools operating in the city.
A council resolution authored by Councilor Michael Fernandez said no review school operating in the city must be spared from the probe.
The body made the move soon after reviewers of a Northcap Review Center, a local review center here, trooped to the city council during its regular session on Tuesday to seek help after they failed to be included in the list of scheduled examinees for the board examination in June.
Fifty-nine nursing graduates from the University of Pangasinan enrolled at Northcap, located at the corner of Perez Boulevard and Galvan Street, for review starting April 1 and P15,000 each from them were collected.
They said they enrolled for a nursing review course at Northcap Review Center but the company reneged on its promise to register them for the Nursing Board Examination next month.
The review center had promised to collate and present the required documents of the reviewers for an added fee of P1,500.
But to the reviewers’ consternation and for reasons still unknown to them, they soon found out that they were not listed as among those authorized to take the nursing examination to be given by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) in June.
They suspected the review center is not accredited by CHED despite claims to the contrary by Northcap.
Joy Bautista, an officer of the Philippine Nursing Association (PNA) chapter, decided to take the cudgels for the reviewers and asked the Dagupan City Council to act on their behalf.
“We have no power to investigate fraudulent review schools, so we asked CHED to take the initiative,” Councilor Danilo Torio said.
“But the complaint of the nursing students who cannot take the board examinations in June is worth looking into since most of the victims are from Dagupan,” Torio added.
Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo urged CHED to probe not only Northcap but all other review centers operating in the city.—LM
