TAYUG–The killer of Jose Doton, former leader of the group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The accused, Joel Flores, was also meted another 10 years and one day of prison to maximum of 14 years of reclusion temporal for the frustrated murder of Doton’s brother, Diosdado.

Judge Ulysses Raciles Butuyan of RTC branch 51 also ordered Flores in his 16-page decision pay for damages of P500,000 to the heirs of Jose Doton and P200,000 to Diosdado Doton.

Jose Doton was shot dead by motorcycle riding suspects on May 16, 2006 along Anong Road, Barangay Camanggaan, San Nicolas while he was on board a motorcycle driven by Diosdado. They were on their way home to Barangay Cabuloan.

Flores was identified by Juanito Primero, son-in-law of Jose, who was then harvesting mongo in a field and just about 10 meters away from the crime.

Flores also had a case of illegal possession of firearms in Barangay Domanpot, Asingan town. The 45 caliber pistol seized from him by the police when he was about to draw it when the police tried to arrest him matched with the empty shells  recovered in Barangay Camanggaan in the Doton killing.

Diosdado was also badly wounded during the attack but survived.

Jose Doton was a known oppositor of the San Roque Multi-purpose Dam Project through his group, TIMMAWA, an alliance of farmers along the Agno River. #
