The significance of corporate responsibility was recently underscored in the fight against illegal drugs.

Taking the lead is the CSI Group of Companies owned by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez. It has vowed to do its part to help the country realize its dream to become completely drug free by year 2010 by refusing employment to illegal drug users.

Fernandez, also concurrently the executive director and vice chairman of the Dagupan City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC), outlined her anti-drug program that she will implement in her own company in a meeting with officials of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) regional office headed by Regional Director Col. Jean Aunzo on Thursday.

She said she will require all applicants and present CSI employees in the city and in various parts of Pangasinan, Baguio, La Union and Ilocos Sur to undergo drug tests and all those found positive will be denied employment.

“I will make CSI as an example, I am going to ask all the employees and new applicants to undergo drug test,” she told newsmen.

She said, she will encourage   other establishments in Dagupan City to adopt the same policy to ensure that no drug abuse will take place within and outside the work places.

Fernandez said, being the executive director and vice chairman of CADAC, she must lead by example as it would be embarrassing to her if her own employees are known or are discovered to be drug users while she is fighting drug abuse.

“This is one small measure to help eradicate illegal drugs and we will start it in our own company,” Fernandez said, pointing out that CADAC will soon spearhead various anti-drug symposia in schools and communities, in coordination with the PDEA.

She lauded Police Chief Dionicio Borromeo for his efforts to combat drug trafficking in the city having arrested more than 100 suspects since he assumed his post as the city’s police chief.

Fernandez said she will make CSI a model business organization in Northern Luzon in the fight drug addiction.—LM
