Classes in public schools will still open on June 10
DESPITE REQUEST FOR POSTPONEMENT
LINGAYEN–Life must go on, especially for the children.
So classes in Cosme-ravaged Pangasinan will re-open as originally scheduled on June 10 with rehabilitation work on damaged schools in full blast, according to Dr. Alma Ruby Torio, schools division superintendent of Pangasinan Division 1.
“Tuloy ang opening ng classes sa June 10,” Torio said in an interview with The PUNCH.
Gov. Amado Espino Jr earlier said he would request the Department of Education to suspend the opening of classes in the province for another two weeks.
She said based on consultations with teachers and parents, including in towns most heavily damaged, people want to open classes as planned so that the education of the children will not be affected.
“Even if we have to put up tents just to accommodate our schoolchildren,” the teachers and parents told Torio. Engineers from the central office as well as regional and division physical facilities coordinators are continuously inspecting the damages and assessing the necessary repair work required.
Based on the report of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council, there are 605 totally damaged classrooms in the whole province and 1,121 partially damaged.
Other schools, Torio said still have other classrooms ready for repair which can be used to accommodate other classes.
Double shifts may be adopted while other damaged facilities are being repaired.
Pangasinan is composed of Divisions 1 and 2, and the cities of Alaminos, San Carlos and Dagupan.#
