City school gets free, new 1,000 science books
It was Christmas in June for pupils of a city public school in Dagupan City.
Two multinational firms and one local company donated more than 1,000 science books to primary students in Dagupan following representation made by Acting Mayor Belen Fernandez and two civic groups.
Colgate-Palmolive Philippines, Unilever Philippines and the CSI Group of Companies donated the books for the use of Grades III, IV, V and VI pupils of the East Central Elementary School.
The Rotary Club of Uptown Dagupan and the Philippine Dental Association-Pangasinan Chapter joined Fernandez in making the rounds to solicit the needed books.
The initiative to help the East Central Elementary School was undertaken after the principal informed the vice mayor earlier of the pupils’ dilemma during her recent to the school.
The East Central Elementary School was one of two schools in Dagupan whose opening of classes was delayed by one week because of the heavy damage wrought by Typhoon “Cosme” but was the first among many schools to request for books to replace those lost during the typhoon.
The other school that opened only last June 16 was Pantal Elementary School.
City Schools Superintendent Aurora Domingo echoed the urgent need for more science books in different public schools in the city.
The acting mayor assured the other city schools that she would seek more donations to fill their lack.
Simultaneously with the book distribution, Fernandez launched a supplementary feeding program in the school sponsored by the city government and CSI as part of the city government’s campaign to lower the level of malnutrition among the city’s school children.
City Nutrition Officer Leah Aquino assisted Fernandez in distributing bowls of champorado to the grade school pupils.
The adults in the barangay were also given each a pack of Ensure energy drink to help them cope with illnesses common during the rainy season.
Fernandez is the president and general manager of the CSI Group, owner of a chain of shopping malls, supermarkets and superstores in the region. —LM
