Cable thefts rise after typhoon
In the aftermath of Typhoon Cosme, all the telecommunications and electric companies have complained of renewed and more incidents of cable theft in Dagupan.
P/Supt. Dionicio Borromeo, city police chief, told the city council last week that the rash of cable thefts gave indications that these are already being perpetrated by a well-organized syndicate and has appealed to the city government for more help.
Borromeo was asked by the council to respond to the complaints aired by the telecommunications and electric distributing companies on the rash of cable thefts in the city making it difficult for the public utility companies to hasten the restoration of services in some areas in the city.
“The rise in cable thefts can be attributed to the surge in world copper prices which made copper a very tempting target to criminal elements,” Borromeo said.
Typhoon Cosme toppled many of the electric posts of the Dagupan Electric Corporation (Decorp), the same posts used by the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and other telecommunications and companies for their respective cables.
Borromeo said the combined efforts of the police’s Anti-Cable Theft Task Group and the business sector are not enough to combat the problem and called on the city administration to extend its help.
One of the measures suggested by Borromeo is passage of an ordinance that would regulate operations of junk shops in the city to strengthen the anti-fencing law. #
