ALAMINOS CITY—Forty five poor but deserving students have qualified for the City Comprehensive Scholarship Program (CESP) for school year 2008-2009.

Mayor Hernani Braganza handed the scholarship grants to the beneficiaries whom he described as the “creme de la creme” last Monday at the city hall grounds.

Of the 45 new scholars from different secondary schools in the city, nine graduated valedictorians and salutatorians.

Braganza stressing the import of education as the key to success said, “Our youth must earn their diploma or degree in college to become competitive, better citizen and uplift their families’ living condition.”

He said the establishment of CESP is one way of giving back to the youth who will soon be the future leaders of this city.

To date, the city has granted 121 scholarships amounting to P6 million.

CESP offers a total package amounting to P78,600 annually for full scholars and P58,950 for 75% scholars and P 39,300 and P19,650 for half and 25% scholars per school year, respectively.

The scholarship covers tuition fees, allowance for books, food, traveling, and boarding house and clothing.

For the first time, the city is also offering scholarship to students who wish to study law and medicine in any school of their choice.

Braganza urged the new scholars to sacrifice, work hard and concentrate on their studies to fulfill their dreams in life and those of their parents.

The mayor also challenged the scholars to set lofty goals and do their best to attain or even exceed them.

Renato R. Viray, City Schools Division Superintendent, thanked the city government for investing on the city’s youth and raising the standard of education in the city through its “Bright Child Program”.—LM
