Relief operations alleviated conditions for typhoon victims
DAGUPAN’S QUICK RESPONSE
THE city government of Dagupan was the first local government unit in Pangasinan that undertook relief operations distributing 19,353 family food packs to all its 31 barangays immediately after Typhoon “Cosme” struck.
This distribution was effected shortly after the the city council headed by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez passed a resolution on May 19placing Dagupan under the state of calamity.
Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. lauded the different barangays for providing for their own relief packs out of their calamity funds for their constituents.
The Pangasinan Chinese Chamber of Commerce also provided 1,000 packs of food packages to Dagupan.
The Indian-Filipino Chamber of Commerce also committed to donate to the city 1,000 packs of used clothing for children, 1,200 packs of towels and blankets; and 3,200 pieces of medicines for diarrhea for distribution during rehabilitation operations.
The City Disaster Council also acknowledged the donation of business magnate Lucio Tan of a water processing facility that would ensure that residents had access to safe potable water at any time.
The CDCC reported 24,973 families or 106,527 persons affected by the typhoon accounting for 15,034 houses that were partially damaged and another 3,349 totally damaged .
There were four persons killed and four others injured in Dagupan at the height of the typhoon.
The losses in fisheries were placed at P546.4 million, the biggest of which was in aquaculture (bangus production) at 5,750 tons or P537.4 million after 900 units of fishpens were totally damaged and 100 units partially damaged, resulting in a loss of 3,870,000 kilos or 3,870 tons of bangus.
Losses in municipal fisheries were placed at P400,000 and marginal fisheries at P8.7 million. LM
