This was one of the pledges made by the Pangasinan Muslim Assembly as they signed on Monday a covenant with the provincial police to preserve peace and progress by helping fight all forms of criminality.
“Umpisahan natin sa mga maliliit na bagay gaya ng pagsugpo sa mga sugal gaya ng jueteng,” said Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, head of thePangasinan police force.
“Dapat walang kapatid na Muslim ang tataya sa jueteng,” he added.
The covenant was signed by Datu Alla Maasir and Mangontawar Sultan, president and secretary, respectively of the Pangasinan Muslim Assembly which represents about 25,000 Muslims in Pangasinan.
“… we bind ourselves to fight crimes and other unlawful acts in the communities we live in,” the covenant reads.
The Muslim group’s leaders acknowledged the need for a united and sustained cooperation among them and the police authorities not just in fighting criminality but in addressing poverty.
Nerez also lauded the Muslim community for their support in the campaign against illegal drugs resulting in the arrest of several suspects, including some members of their community.#
