First drag race in Pangasinan held

BINALONAN— Drag racing enthusiasts in the province finally showed up here in their modified cars and motorcycles without fear of being accosted or arrested by the police last Saturday May 17.

They came to witness the drag races at the Binalonan Airfield, the very first legal drag race event held in the province.

The event, dubbed Vice Mayor Ramon Guico III Invitational Open Drag Race, was sponsored by the Auto limits Pangasinan Auto Group Inc. headed by Rafael de Vera with Patrick Catama as race director.

De Vera said his group is promoting drag racing in Pangasinan for the first time partly to discourage the holding of illegal drag racing in the province which have been noted in the past.

Drag race is a kind of motor sports that involves a contest on acceleration.

Legal drag races are regularly held in various parts of the country, especially in Cebu, Batangas, Subic and Clark.

The theme of the day-long event was “No to drugs, yes to drag” and the the invitational drag race was sanctioned by the Automotive Association of the Philippines (AAP), the governing body of all motor sports in the Philippines.

The participants from Batangas, Cavite, Manila, Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, Isabela, La Union, Baguioand Tarlac competed in two categories, the four-wheel and two-wheel (motorbike category).

The four-wheel riders saw action in the Sportsman Pro Class, Hotstreet Class, Street Stock Class and Quick 8 Class.

The race was ongoingas of presstime.

P10,000, P5,000 and P3,000 cash prizes were up for grabs  for the top three places.

The champion in the motorbike category was to receive P5,000 and P2,000 for the runner-up.

The motorcycle ridersalso participated in the knock out rounds  for  the 110 cc Stock  Modified Class, 110 cc Open Class, 125 cc Stock Modified Class, 125 cc Open Class, 150 cc Stock Modified (4-valve) class and 150 cc Open (4 valve) Raider Class.—LM
