LINGAYEN–Appalled by the state of government hospitals around the province, Governor Amado Espino Jr. has ordered the repair of buildings and upgrade initially of the facilities of eight of the 14 hospitals.

“Kung makikita nyo lang ang state ng mga hospitals natin, parang ayaw mong pa-ospital,” Espino said.

The hospitals given priority for immediate repairs and upgrading are the hospitals in San Carlos City, Lingayen, Manaoag, Umingan, Dasol, Alaminos, Tayug and Pozorrubio.

He pointed out that some hospitals have no basic facilities such as a morgue, lounges for staff, laboratory facilities, kitchen, power generator or even toilets for patients.

He also noted that many beds are rusty and the buildings are dilapidated.

“So we can’t really blame our health providers if they could not give their best to serve the people. Our doctors are very capable but we have to give them an efficient working environment,” he said.

The provincial government administers one hospital in each of the six congressional districts, seven community hospitals and one provincial hospital.

About 20% of the province’s P1 billion budget is spent for the hospitals’ operations.

Espino said the repairs and upgrade are targeted for completion by the end of the year.

Further, Espino said he has called for a program to improve work attitudes among hospital staff, including doctors.#
