‘Bangus Street Party’ rained on but festivities continue
Despite two-hours of heavy rains, the Bangusan Street Party on Wednesday carried on with much enthusiasm and revelry.
Las PiƱas Rep. Cynthia Villar, who represented her husband, Senate President Manny Villar; Gina de Venecia, wife of Pangasinan fourth district Rep. Jose de Venecia Jr.; and former Guimaras Gov. Emily Lopez joined Dagupan Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez and other city officials in leading the ceremonial lighting of the 600 grills set up along a one kilometer stretch of A.B. Fernandez Avenue.
“I have attended several festivals in the past but this is the most exciting,” Villar said.
The crowd, ready with umbrellas, lined the sidewalks and greeted the officials as they walked along the avenue, dancing to thetune of the Bangus Festival song.
In the evening, popular bands from Metro Manila, provided nightlong entertainment on nine separate stages set up for the festivities and kept people singing and dancing throughout the night.
Vice Mayor Fernandez, chair of theBangus Festival 2008, said the heavy downpour was actually a refreshing break from the summer heat.
“Ang tao nagpayong, nagtiyaga at hindi umalis,” she said.
Mayor Fernandez said they intend to set up a foundation for the Bangus Festival to institutionalize the event, which started in2003.
The mayor said a total of 27,000 pieces of bangus were grilled and and 120 sacks of charcoal were used to replenish the rain-soaked charcoal.
P/Supt. Dionicio Borromeo, city police chief, said no untoward incident was reported.#
