Scientists from Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia are expected to arrive to attend an international training-seminar on sea cucumber set at the Asian Fisheries Academy in Dagupan from April 14 to 16.

Dr. Westly Rosario, interim executive director of the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) based at the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) compound in barangay Bonuan Binloc, said the three-day training/seminar, the first to be hosted by the academy, will be attended by foreign scientists in a bid to boost the sea cucumber industry in the country.
He said the event will address the problem of over-extraction and over-harvesting, partly through hatchery methods and proper collection, to improve the harvest of sea cucumber, a high-value aqua product, which fetches up to about $1,000 per kilo in the international market.

“Halos kasinglaki na lang ng band-aid ‘yung binebenta sa China na dapat sana ay mas malaki,” Rosario said.

The Philippines and Indonesia are among the top exporters of sea cucumber worldwide, with China as the number one market.

“Ang kagandahan nito ay ma-sustain natin ang sea cucumber and walang problema sa marketing since kaunti na nga ang supply ngayon,” Rosario said. –CSR
