ASINGAN–The town was star-struck over the weekend but it was not over the presence of some TV or movie stars, for there were none. They had the town’s biggest stars.

Former President Fidel Ramos and Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr., two prominent sons of this town, led the festivities in the celebration of its fiesta last Saturday.

Ramos and Esperon arrived here as promised and shared their childhood memories with the townsfolk in several events as they relished their reunion with their kabaleyans and the balikbayans.

Esperon, who is due for retirement next month, pointed out that he finished his primary education at a public elementary school here, took his secondary education at the Philippine Science High School in Manila, and college at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA)

They led the inauguration of the new police station, built at a cost of P4 million, and the annual Taray ti Asingan, which was initiated by Ramos in 1982.

They witnessed the turn-over of the four multi-cab type patrol cars donated by citizens to the police station.

Top officials of the Philippine National Police (PNP) led by Director General Jesus Versoza, deputy chief of the PNP for operations also joined the occasion.

Versoza said the construction and upgrade of police stations nationwide is part of their Integrated Transformation Program, which also includes the development of human resource, systems and procedures, and facilities and equipment.

Mayor Carlos Lopez Sr. took the occasion to thank the PNP for funding the construction of the new building on a 556-square meter lot provided by the municipal government.

Senior Superintendent Isagani Nerez, provincial police director, in turn, thanked the municipal government for its support for PNP’s operations.

Meanwhile, General Esperon, who is rumored to be appointed secretary of National Defense soon, brushed aside the speculations, saying, “Walang sinasabi sa akin, so everything is now purely speculative”.

He, however, admitted that he would be happy to take on the job as a form of return service for being a “product of the public school system”.

“Kaya dapat lang na makabawi sa akin ang bayan o ang gobyerno,” he said, adding that he is always ready when called for service, “whether government or non-government”.—CSR
