Taipan LT, now an adopted son of Pangasinan
Lucio Tan, one of the country’s taipans, is now an adopted son of Pangasinan after he was conferred Doctor of Humanities in Business and Entrepreneurship, honoris causa, by the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) in Dagupan City, Wednesday.
Tan, who leads more than 30 companies comprising the Lucio C. Tan Group of Companies, received the honors during the LNU’s commencement exercises held at the CSI Stadia. He came to the city with his wife, Carmen and 80 other Chinese businessmen.
“LNU is honored and privileged to be the only university in region 1 to confer a doctorate degree to our honoree,” said Dr. Gonzalo Duque.
Dr. Salvador Duque, president emeritus of LNU, read the resolution honoring Tan, saying, “Tan is a living embodiment of the core values of hard work, perseverance, humility, simplicity, frugality, benevolence and kindness which every Lycean endeavors to follow and imbibe”.
It also lauded his accomplishments not just as one of the most successful businessmen in the country but also for his involvement in various socio-economic organizations.
Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, presiding officer of the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Dagupan, also read a resolution approved on March 31by the city council adopting Tan as honorary son of Dagupan.
Fernandez, with Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr., presented the plaque for Tan’s adoption during the LNU graduation rites.
The provincial government of Pangasinan also passed a separate resolution making Tan an adopted son of Pangasinan.
Tan, in his speech thanked LNU and the Pangasinan community.
He said like the previous rites granting him honoris causa, he is humbled again.
Tan also shared entrepreneurship advice, saying business and entrepreneurship is like bread and butter.
“Inseparable,” he said, adding, “one engages in entrepreneurship to gain from the business…As he recognizes the opportunity for business, he sees also the customer’s needs and cash-capability to support the business,” Tan said. #
