PANGASINAN’s oldest and most prestigious one day bicycle road race, dubbed as “Werweran ed Mangaldan” for the last 15 years, unfolds today in conjunction with the celebration of the town fiesta.

The annual open bikefest will again see the participation of big guns in Philippine cycling, spearheaded by two-time and defending champion Victor Espiritu.

Other national tour winners from Pangasinan, Arnel Quirimit of Pozorrubio and Santy Barnachea of Umingan towns, are expected to participate.

Other well-known riders who confirmed their participation are former Tour winner Warren Davadilla, Nueva Ecija ace Eric Feliciano, national team members Llyod Reynante and Ronald Gorantes plus Pangasinan elite pedal pushers Sherwin Carrera, Elmo Ramos, Jr, Reynaldo Navarro, Enrique Domingo, Renato Sembrano and Ariel Flores.

The race will be a 180-kilometer event and the main highlight of the day’s spectacle.

Mayor Herminio Romero said this year’s affair will again be run in three categories, namely: the Indepakit (Pedicab), Master-Executive, and the Pro-Elite divisions with huge cash prizes amounting to almost P85,000.

Special prizes will also be donated by former PNP Region 1 Director Chief Superintendent Leopoldo Bataoil, Dagupan City Mayor Alipio Fernandez, Jr., Public Works and Highways Region 1 Director Fidel D. Ginez, Engr. Rodolfo Dion, Liza Ferrer Enriquez, Blandino Caguioa, Jesse Maanao, Puzon Frame and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Evans.

“We are staging this event yearly because it has become a tradition for the townspeople of Mangaldan every time we celebrate our town fiesta and we can’t afford to miss it,” Romero said.

“The other reason is, we want to contribute in sports development in the province especially cycling where we consistently produce national cycling champions and SEA Games medalists,” he added.-JAGJr.
