THE San Carlos City team, powered by students from various schools and colleges in the city, garnered eight gold, five silver, and five bronze medals in an all-style karate tournament held in Angeles City, Pampanga on March 2.

Sensie Ronald Vistro, head of the de-legation and chief instructor of the Wado Ryu Karate-Do Institute, said the tournament was participated in by 172 karatekas from Laguna, Batangas, National Capital Region, Bataan, Pampanga, Olongapo and Pangasinan.

The San Carlos City team prevailed in what was considered the most exciting category, the Men’s individual Kumite (open weight division) where Rocky Benitez, 4th year student of Saint Therese College, overpowered five other competitors in the elimination rounds for the gold.

His teammate Franklie Sunga of Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation won the silver in that category.

Members of the San Carlos team also bested seasoned fighters from NCR in the championship of team kumite with Benjie Cervantes, also of VMUF, Sunga and Benitez winning a gold medal each.

Other gold medalists from San Carlos City were Manick Ferrer  (VMUF Special Science High School), Boys Kata; Jogebeth Untalan  (Central II), Girls’ Kumite; Jessie Boy Paragas, Boy’sKumite; and Mar Garcia.

Silver medalists were Mariel Cabrera, Maruja Cabrera, Rhikki Marie Poquiz, Christopher Nobleza, and Vincent Agbuya.

Vistro said the tournament was his wards’ tune-up event for the upcoming Philippine Olympic Festival to be held in Olongapo City and the National   PRISAA (Private Schools Athletic Association) to be held in Zamboanga City in April.

Meanwhile, athletes and instructors of the Wado Ryu Karate- Do Institute donated blood  to the international Red Cross last March 15 in a blood-letting activity at the Central II Astrodome in San Carlos City.—CIO
