LABRADOR–Forensic experts exhumed on Thursday the body of a woman, buried at the town cemetery here, believed to be that of Sherlyn Cadapan, one of the two University of the Philippines (UP) students who have been missing since 2006.

The forensic experts from UP and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), headed by Commissioner Wilhelm Soriano, were accompanied by the family of the missing UP students Karen Empeño and Cadapan, who were reported abducted on July 26, 2006 in Hagonoy, Bulacan.

Also present during the exhumation were members of the local police and human rights group Karapatan.

The two students are believed to have been illegally arrested for alleged militant activities against the government.

Erlinda Cadapan, mother of Sherlyn, said she strongly felt that the exhumed body could indeed be her daughter’s since the frame resembled that of her daughter.

“Malakas ang kutob ko na siya ang anak ko,?” she said even as she remained hopeful that her daughter is still alive and being kept somewhere.

The body will be brought to UP for autopsy and DNA testing.

P/Sr.Insp. Roberto Manuel, police chief here, said the body was discovered in an open field near the bridge in barangay Bolo in July last year and was later buried when no one came forward to claim it after eight days.

He said the corpse was about 5 feet in height, about 100 pounds, in fair complexioned, and was wearing a long sleeved blouse and a pair of long pants.

He added that the cadaver appeared to have burns in the face, hands, neck, and at the back.—CSR
