Gulayan sa Paaralan Pagsasarili project launched in Dagupan
The city agriculture office (CAO) in Dagupan has started distributing vegetable seeds to 35 high school and elementary public schools in time for next school year’s implementation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Pagsasarili program.
Alberto de Vera, agricultural technologist of the CAO, told The PUNCH that the program, a joint undertaking of the city government and the Department of Education (DEPED) through the city schools division, is aimed at developing the value of self-reliance among the students.
The initial seeds that were distributed include ampalaya, radish and others that are ideal for planting in vacant lots within school compounds.
By June, De Vera said hydrophonic gardening (vegetable seeds planted in containers) as well as organic farming, which uses natural fertilizers, will be introduced.
The program also includes promotion of aqua-culture projects, i.e., raising tilapia, hito or bangus within fish ponds or concrete tanks.
Barangay councils have been fully supporting the program in schools in their respective areas.—CSR
