Espino: Province needs more role models

Governor Amado Espino Jr. and Dagupan City Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. underscored the significance of the outstanding achievements of fifteen awardees honored by a radio program on March 23.

Espino, in a speech read by his consultant Cesar Carpio, himself an awardee, pointed out that “we need role models in these crucial times.

Fernandez, on the other hand, said “the progressive evolution of societies has been indirectly guided and influenced by outstanding leaders and their work.”

Leading the honorees was Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz who was cited for his moral reform and crusade against jueteng.

Whistle blower Jose de Venecia III who was cited for his anti corruption campaign and his expose of the cancelled NBN-ZTE broadband contract. Former Vice Mayor Felipe Siapno received the plaque for him.

Undersecretary Antonio Villar Jr., dubbed as the anti-smuggling czar was recognized for his unrelenting fight against car smuggling that has earned billions of pesos for the government. A representative received the award forVillar.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III was cited for his “unrelenting efforts to improve public health and sustained disease prevention measures including massive war on tobacco use and promotion of breastfeeding.”

Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane’s plaque cited his “department’s inclusion in the list of the ten least corrupt government agencies under his watch.” Public Works and Highways Region l Director Fidel Ginez received the award in his behalf.

The other honorees are Atty. Raul Lambino, Judge Clifton Ganay, Pro-secutor Caridad Junio, TV newscaster Maki Pulido, marine research expert Westly Rosario, balikbayan Alfredo Dawana, journalist historian Restituto Basa and police officer Dionicio Borromeo.

In accepting his award, Dawana said, “my story is simple and ordinary. It took a retirement in the US and abandoned, suffering people in Tocok Island, the smallest surrounding in Dagupan to lure me back to Pangasinan, the province of my birth. I’m doing my share and this award is very humbling.”

The event was organized by the broadcast magazine “Diwa, Salita at Gawa” produced by newsman Ruben Rivera. #
