Dagupan to host IRAA in 2009
DAGUPAN CITY will host next year’s Ilocos Region Athletic Association (IRAA) Meet, according to City Schools Superintendent Aurora Domingo.
Domingo said Mayor Alipio Fernandez Jr. already approved the plan and has pledged the city government’s full support.
She added they feel confident that the mayor, also presently acting chairman of the Philippine Track and Filed Association, can easily organize the event.
Pangasinan 1 hosted the just concluded 2008 IRAA Meet with most of the games played at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRCSC).
The province is scheduled to be the venue of the 2009 Palarong Pambansa.
Domingo said Dagupan, host of many national sports events in the past, is very capable of hosting another IRAA Meet.
The city has its Dagupan City People’s Astrodome which is scheduled for renovation this year, and an idle Olympic-sized swimming pool it inherited from the Philippine Tourism Authority.
In addition, the newly-built CSI Stadia and Jimmy Fernandez Center owned by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, can serve as a venue for indoor sports, including lawn tennis, table tennis, basketball, and volleyball.
The athletic oval at the Bonuan Boquig Elementary School could be the venue for athletic and track and field events, though the facility also needs repairs.
Domingo said the city will also have to prepare 14 billeting centers. – Odessa Karen P. Salinas
