GAWAD Kalinga housing units, intended for the poorest of the poor, will soon mushroom around the province.

Manuel Casupang, GK provincial coordinator, said there are now two existing GK projects, one ongoing, another to be started next month while another is being lined up.

The existing projects are found in Bangusville in Bonuan Gueset, Dagupan City and another in barangay Matic-Matic, Sta. Barbara.

Ongoing is the project in barangay Leet, Sta. Barbara, christened Larryvile by its initiator, Mayor Reynaldo Velasco.

Velasco signed a memorandum of agreement with Antonio Meloto, GK national president, for the construction of 100 housing units on a one-hectare lot made available to the municipal government by the Department of Agrarian Reform.

The mayor is now building the model house in Leet and upon its completion on March 1, GK will build 99 more housing units with the beneficiaries providing labor as their contribution.

Casupang said another GK project is set to be constructed next month on a 10-hectare lot in barangay Pangapisan, Lingayen, made available by Governor Amado Espino Jr.

Lined up for construction is the GK project in Alaminos City on a land promised to be donated by Mayor Hernani Braganza.

Casupang and Ricky Castillo, GK regional director, consider the Bangusville in Dagupan the most advanced GK project yet with 99 houses already constructed.

Castillo said among the entities that donated houses there include the Couples for Christ of Maryland U.S.A. and the Philippine Long Distance Company, which donated P1 million.

Members of the United Pangasinenes of America Incorporated also promised to donate an amount that will be used to build another 30 houses in Dagupan at P80,000 per house.

Bangusville sits on a five-hectare land made available by the Dagupan City government.

The beneficiaries there put up a bakery and a common vegetable garden as their livelihood project.

The bakery which is now serves as the source of “pandesal” and bread for all the residents.—LM
